WiebeTech introduces DriveBlock™ (patent pending) that enables selective write-blocking on WiebeTech storage enclosures
Wichita, KS — January 10, 2006 — WiebeTech is introducing a software feature that allows the user to choose when to turn on and off the write-block feature of a WiebeTech drive inside selected WiebeTech enclosures.
DriveBlock™ (patent pending) allows users to selectively enable and disable write-blocking on external WiebeTech storage enclosures.
"Users want to be able to create backups of their critical data, then 'write-block' the backup so that it can't be further altered by accident," said James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech LLC. "DriveBlock was created to facilitate this user request. The user is able to read or write their external hard drive in a completely normal manner, then enable the DriveBlock feature. After that point, the contents of the drive may be read and examined without difficulty, but may not be altered. Any attempt to alter the data is 'blocked' by DriveBlock from within the storage enclosure. It doesn't matter what host computer the drive enclosure is attached to -- the data is unalterable."
The DriveBlock feature is controlled through a simple utility which may be installed on Windows, Macintosh or even certain Linux systems. Access to the utility is controlled through a password.
DriveBlock is useful for the following groups of customers:
* Backup applications, where the data is retained through application of the DriveBlock feature.
* Distribution of data, where a user wants to load data on a hard drive, then distribute that data to field locations in such a way that the receiving party can't alter the data.
* Forensic investigators, so that a permanent, unalterable record may be kept of a criminal investigation.
DriveBlock will initially be available as a feature on two different WiebeTech products: WiebeTech's shock protected ToughTech 800 enclosure; and WiebeTech's high capacity field deployable RT-5 RAID.
As a new feature, DriveBlock has been added to these products at no additional charge. Most ToughTech 800s shipping after January 23, 2006, will be DriveBlock compatible, as will selected RT-5 configurations.
